Skin Rejuvenation

What is Skin Rejuvenation?

Skin rejuvenation is most commonly used to minimise the appearance of fine lines, especially around the mouth and the eyes. We also have treatments which are effective in treating facial scars and areas of uneven pigmentation and can be practiced on delicate areas of skin such as the chest, neck and hands.

There are various treatments available for skin rejuvenation, and your clinician will help you select the most appropriate treatment plan for your skin type, lifestyle and budget

Non-Ablative Laser Therapy

At Reba we utilize the Palomar StarLux 1540 Laser Sytem which delivers energy in an array of narrow, focussed microbeams, to create columns of coagulation (heat.) within the skin. The heated tissue within the columns initiates a natural healing process that forms new, healthy tissue. This results in a fresher, more youthful skin tone and texture. This is a non-ablative method of skin re-surfacing, unlike some skin treatment devices, such as CO2 lasers, which use the ablative method: removing the epidermis and some of the dermis. While a good result is eventually seen, the drawbacks of ablative methods include red and raw skin, and a risk of infection for several weeks after treatment. With the StarlLux 1540 , beams penetrate deeper into the dermis than any competing device for effective, long-term results. And the fractional non-ablative approach stimulates quick healing in the dermis, while leaving the epidermis intact (significantly reducing risk of infection), with no lasting redness.

The process improves the appearance of skin by affecting only a fraction of skin at a time, using microscopic laser points and a patented cooling system, which limits discomfort. This treatment method allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entire area was treated at once, using the body’s natural healing process to create new, healthy tissue.

The treatment consists of three to five sessions, each being around four weeks apart. Each session lasts approximately 40 minutes. Results are immediate but optimal improvement is usually visible within three to six months. Side effects of this procedure are minimal and patients may experience the sensation of mild sunburn for an hour or two, with skin being slightly pink for up to a week.
Following the treatment, a high SPF sunscreen of at least 30 plus, should be used at least twice daily to protect skin from sun exposure during the healing phase and for several months after treatment has ended.

IPL for Photorejuvenation

Photorejuvenation is a dynamic, non-ablative process, which generates intense pulsed light to safely reduce the melanin (dark pigment) in the skin, so that pigmented lesions fade and slowly disappear. Photofacial reduces the deleterious appearance of a number of age-related conditions of the skin, including brown spots, age spots, freckles, broken capillaries, spider veins, and large pores as well as redness, flushing and rosacea.

Treatment is suitable for all skin types and ages, no downtime is required and there is a low risk of side effects. It involves a cooling conducting gel being applied to the skin, after which a hand held treatment head delivers pulses of light through a filter selected according to the patients skin type. The pulsed light penetrates the tissue and is absorbed by either the blood when treating vascular lesions or the melanin when treating pigmented lesions damaging them. The body’s natural processes then remove the injured tissue giving the skin a more even luminous, younger look. Most patients feel little or no pain, but for those who are extra sensitive a topical anaesthetic can be used.

The treatment is generally administered as a series of between 3 – 5 treatments at 3 – 4 week intervals. The whole face is treated, not only the affected area, as this gives a more uniform and aesthetically pleasing result. Results can be seen almost immediately.

Chemical peels are also an option for treating these areas.

Tear Trough Rejuvenation

This non-surgical treatment is available for patients who have lower eyelid dark circles or hollowing under the eyes, which are also referred to as tear troughs. Surgical treatments have previously been the only effective way of combating tear troughs, however, the use of Restylane injections now offers patients a non-surgical treatment option.
The treatment is undertaken as an outpatient procedure, offering immediate cosmetic results with a reduced risk of the complications associated with surgery and a very short recovery period.
Occasional contour irregularities can occur following injection and these are managed with firm massage. If a patient is dissatisfied with the result, the Restylane can be dissolved with the use of a small injection. Bruising and mild swelling may occur but these usually resolve within a week and any discomfort associated with the treatment is usually mild.
The effects of the injections last approximately 6-12 months before repeat injections are required.

Anti-Wrinkle Treatments

Muscle relaxing injections are a well-recognised treatment for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. Botulinum has been used by ophthalmologists around the eyes for over 15 years to prevent muscle spasms. Consequently we have a great deal of in depth experience in this area.

There are two types of wrinkles that we treat.

1. Dynamic wrinkles occur with muscle action and are particularly noticeable as frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead lines on lifting the brows, and laughter lines that extend further than you would like. The injections temporarily block this muscle action reducing the appearance and depth of the lines.

2. Static wrinkles are present when the muscle is relaxed. These do not resolve on Botulinum treatment, however may reduce with time. These fine static rhytids can be improved with other non surgical options such as restylane or non-ablative fractional laser . The use of regular treatments does reduce the onset and progression of these wrinkles.

Dermal Fillers

These treatments are used in several areas: facial lines and wrinkles that are visible at rest; enhancing lips by improving definition and / or increasing volume; frown lines; nasolabial folds; and certain types of acne scarring.

Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring compound in the skin. Hyaluronic acid retains moisture in the skin and contributes towards skin volume and tone and the levels of hyaluronic acid decrease with age.

Treatments are given by injection into the skin and the hyaluronic acid replenishes both volume and tone.

In order for the hyaluronic acid to remain in the skin for any length of time it has to be combined with a ‘carrier’. We use the Q-Med range or Restylane products which have been developed to treat specific areas, depths of creases.

Your choice of product can be discussed with your practitioner at the time of your consulation and they will recommend which would benefit you most. All can be used alongside antiwrinkle injections where applicable. No allergy test is required and they are suitable for all skin types.

The treatment can take as little as 20 minutes but may take longer depending on your individual requirements. However, we do recommend that local anaesthetic cream is applied at least 20 minutes prior to the procedure. The injection is carried out using a very fine needle and even though the discomfort is usually minimal we routinely offer anaesthetic creams. After treatment, slight swelling and small red marks may appear but will usually fade within a few hours. Some bruising can occur , paticualrly if you are taking anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen or aspirin and it is sometimes advised to stop these 2 weeks before the treatment. HOWEVER, if these medicines are prescribed by your own doctor DO NOT STOP them without speaking to your own doctor. You can still have the treatments if you need to stay on them, there is just more likelihood of bruising.

The effects are visible immediately and last for 4-9 months. We recommend that you budget for 1-2 treatments per area per year.
